INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — This weekend, Indianapolis is set to experience a powerful celebration of Black dance, music, and culture, blending history, movement, and artistry in a way that keeps audiences engaged and inspired.
Lalah Ayan Hazelwood, co-artistic director of the Kenyetta Dance Company, and Lecia Floyd, program manager for Arts for Lawrence, joined Daybreak to preview “SOUL: A Celebration of Black Dance, Music and Culture,” which highlights the transformative power of Black creativity.
“This program is special because we are highlighting Black music, and you will see Black dance to this Black music,” Hazelwood said. “You’ll also see cultural references in our costuming and choreography, with different vignettes offering education about the artists we’re performing…legends like Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin, and Roberta Flack. It’s an ode to Black music from the ’60s and ’70s.”
The show, described as a journey through the transformative power of Black creativity, will feature music from icons such as Nina Simone and Roberta Flack, among others. Hazelwood and Floyd emphasized that these artists lived everyday lives, using their personal experiences to shape their music and art.
Beyond the performances, the event aims to educate and inspire. The team hopes audiences walk away with a deeper appreciation for the artists’ impact and the cultural significance of their work.
For those eager to experience it firsthand, the performance will take place at the Theater at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave., on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
General admission tickets are $25, with discounted $18 tickets available for students, military members, and seniors.
