With staffing shortages affecting Hoosier law enforcement agencies, the Indiana State Police have partnered with the University of Indianapolis launched the first “Careers in Public Safety” aimed at attracting a new, diverse talent pool and increases applications for a wide variety of professional staff positions—from forensic scientists and nurses to drone pilots and human resources.
The event lasted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 6 in UIndy Hall inside the Schwitzer Student Center. Students in majors like criminal justice, psychology and business got the opportunity to meet with ISP professionals from many different divisions and explore career opportunities with interactive and hands-on demonstrations.

The Indiana State Police is expanding recruiting efforts beyond traditional methods in order to strengthen the pipeline of new talent. In addition to recruiting troopers, the ISP also has needs for other professional staff members like chemists, crime scene investigators, motor carrier inspectors and crime analysts. Partnering with universities like UIndy is a key strategy to attract and inspire the next generation of public safety professionals.
“I’m excited about the Careers in Public Safety event because it showcases such a wide variety of public safety careers that extend far beyond traditional roles,” said Jessica Sremanak, director of employer engagement at the University of Indianapolis. “Our mission and highest priority at UIndy is to ensure students are ready to thrive after graduation and events like this give them the chance to explore real career paths and make meaningful connections with professionals in the field.”
“Building a pipeline of new talent is absolutely critical to the future of law enforcement and the entire state of Indiana,” said Sgt. John Perrine, public information officer for the Indiana State Police. “Events like these give students a hands-on look at the numerous opportunities available in public safety and hopefully inspire them to consider careers that can make a real difference for their communities and all Hoosiers.”
