If 2024 was a mix of fevers, colds and coughs for you, here are some ways to avoid them in the New Year | Health News

As the clock ticks forward and 2025 dawns, staying healthy is no longer just about avoiding illness; it’s a lifestyle choice shaped by lessons learned in a post-pandemic world.

In 2024, unpredictable weather patterns and the enduring effects of modern routines resulted in a rise in common illnesses like fevers, colds, and coughs, said Dr Sandeep Sonawane, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai

The seasoned expert reflects on how health has been redefined in this era. Prevention, as he points out, is no longer just an option but a way of life. With this in mind, here’s a roadmap to staying healthy and thriving in 2025.

1. Practice Basic Hygiene

According to Dr Sonawane, proper hygiene remains a cornerstone of good health. Washing your hands regularly with soap and water can significantly reduce the spread of germs. “Make it a habit to wash before meals or touching your face,” he advises.

For those moments when soap and water aren’t accessible, keep a hand sanitizer handy. Additionally, steer clear of sharing personal items like utensils and towels, which are common vectors for germ transmission.

2. Boost Your Immunity

Dr Sonawane highlights the pivotal role of diet in maintaining a strong immune system. “Your immune system is your body’s first line of defense,” he explains.

Enhance your meals with colourful fruits and vegetables rich in essential vitamins and minerals. Probiotic foods like yogurt and fermented delicacies can improve gut health, which directly influences immune function.

3. Stay Active and Get Adequate Rest

Exercise is not just about fitness—it’s about fortifying your immune system. “Physical activity boosts blood circulation, which enhances immune cell activity,” Dr Sonawane notes.

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly. Equally critical is sleep. “A good night’s sleep, spanning 7 to 9 hours, is essential for body repair and immune restoration,” he adds.

4. Manage Stress Effectively

“Stress is an invisible enemy of immunity,” says Dr Sonawane. Chronic stress can weaken your body’s defenses, leaving you vulnerable to illnesses. He recommends incorporating mindfulness practices like yoga, meditation, and relaxation techniques into your daily routine.

Engaging in hobbies, maintaining social connections, and enjoying time with loved ones are additional ways to bolster mental health.

5. Stay Updated with Vaccinations

Vaccines are a proven tool in preventing illness. Dr Sonawane underscores the importance of staying up to date with immunizations, including annual flu shots.

“If symptoms persist despite preventive efforts, consulting a healthcare provider promptly is critical,” he advises. Early intervention can lead to faster recovery and prevent complications.

By following these expert tips, you can reduce the likelihood of falling sick and enjoy a vibrant, illness-free 2025. As Dr Sonawane reminds us, “Prevention is always better than cure.” So, take these proactive steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. After all, there’s no better time to prioritise health than the present.

Stay healthy, stay empowered!
