JACKSON, Wyo. — The Teton County Health Department’s CredibleMind is highlighting “Thinking Patterns and Reflection” for its June mental health topic.
The topic addresses how disrupting harmful thinking patterns can improve mental health.
Becoming aware of negative thought patterns, can transform inner dialogue into a more positive mindset. Using reflection skills like mindfulness, self-awareness, adaptability, cognitive reframing and acceptance can help people manage self-destructive thoughts and behaviors, cope with stress and overall make better, healthier choices.
When practicing mindfulness, one way to regulate emotions is to focus on internal thoughts and feelings. People can begin to notice how they physically feel during a particular emotion. For example, “I feel anger in my face,” “…anxiety in my stomach” or “…sadness in my throat”. The ability to notice and label an emotional experience without automatically reacting is key to being able to regulate emotions successfully.
