Gering Public School District patrons will be asked to approve a facilities bond issue of up to $43 million for Middle School renovation and upgrades later this year.
The Gering School Board this week approved placing the issue before voters March 11 in a mail-in only election.
Prior to approving the bond election resolution, Superintendent Dr. Nicole Regan presented a public facilities survey about GMS, and how tours of the current facility impacted the results. “The more community members went into the Middle School, the greater support they had for a bond program because they were able to actually see the facilities, the conditions that our students are working through and our staff are working in, every day,” Regan told KNEB News, “And that was a telling piece for us to say, ‘Yes, we need to open up our doors.’ Our community needs to come in and see our Middle School, and see the state of the facilities, and make that decision on their own.”
Tours are still taking place Wednesdays at 6p and on Saturdays, and Regan says more tours will be added once the engineering firm has completed renderings of what the upgraded facility could look like.
Details on the mail-in bond election process, including deadlines, will be released at a future date.
