Biosphere, hydrosphere, and land-atmosphere interactions are pivotal in shaping weather and climate. Moreover, interactions between the surface, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere significantly influence the environmental conditions crucial for life on Earth. Understanding the dynamics of these changes over time is imperative for comprehending future risks and effectively designing sustainable mitigation and adaptation strategies. The Research Topic ,”Geospatial and Environmental Dynamics in Water Research” strives to bridge the fields of fundamental and applied scientific research. This interdisciplinary domain explores the intricate interplay between Earth’s systems and human activities, utilizing geospatial technologies to unravel complex environmental processes. From understanding the fundamental principles governing natural phenomena to addressing pressing environmental challenges, this field navigates a spectrum of research endeavors with a focus on exploring the underlying mechanisms driving geospatial and environmental dynamics. The collection will encompass topics such as geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, and geoecology; address contemporary environmental issues, including climate change impacts, natural hazards mitigation, ecosystem management, and sustainable development; the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, satellite imagery, and spatial analysis techniques to capture, analyze, and visualize spatial data for informed decision-making; and foster collaboration among geoscientists, environmental researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to generate holistic solutions for complex environmental challenges respectively. This Research Topic provides a platform for scientists and practitioners to explore, analyze, and innovate at the intersection of Earth and anthropogenic systems, facilitating advancements in both fundamental understanding and practical applications for a sustainable future.

This article collection aims to explore the intersection of geosciences, environmental sciences, and water research. The collection welcomes submissions covering a wide range of water-relevant themes, including but not limited to:

1. Hydrological Modeling and Forecasting focusing on the development and application of geospatial models for predicting water availability, distribution, and quality, including groundwater, surface water, and precipitation dynamics.

2. Water Resources Management addressing sustainable management practices and decision-making processes in various socio-environmental contexts.

3. Remote Sensing and GIS Applications for monitoring and assessing water-related phenomena such as land cover changes, hydrological processes, water quality, and ecosystem services.

4. Climate Change and Water Dynamics examining the impacts of climate change on water systems, including shifts in precipitation patterns, changes in hydro-meteorological extremes, and implications for sustainable management, mitigation and adaptation strategies.

5. Hydro-meteorological Hazard Assessment: All types and sub-types of hazards and disasters associated with the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and land, as well as those induced by climate change and variability, will be considered (droughts, floods, mass movements (wet), rainfall erosivity, etc.).

6. Water-Energy-Food Nexus: Articles exploring the interconnections between water, energy, and food production systems, including integrated assessment approaches, trade-offs, and synergies among these sectors to achieve sustainable development goals.

As part of the Frontiers in Water editorial team, the conveners of the “Geospatial and Environmental Dynamics: Between Fundamental and Applied Scientific Research” conference will ensure the inclusion of state-of-the-art research articles and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration across the fields of geosciences, environmental sciences, and water research.
