ONAWAY ― When Gaylord St. Mary senior Daniel Jacobson finished Tuesday night’s game just 13 points shy of reaching 1,000 in his career, it was almost a forgone conclusion that he would leave Onaway on Thursday as GSM’s newest member of the 1,000 point club.
As GSM vs. Onaway matchup got going and Jacobson started scoring, it was obvious he would reach the 1,000 point mark sooner rather than later, with 11 quick points over the first quarter and a half putting him just one basket away from history.
Then, the game nearly grinded to a halt.
First, a scoreboard malfunction stopped play for a few minutes as power cords to the operator board were switched out. Then, Onaway’s Brody George was knocked down and suffered a bad wrist injury, forcing another long stoppage as the Cardinals coaches tended to the freshman.
Physically stopping the game seemed to be the only thing stopping Jacobson from reaching the 1,000-point milestone, but once play finally resumed, it was only a short wait before the senior found space in the lane and sunk a layup to reach the scoring milestone.

Jacobson was a sophomore when his teammate and Class of 2023 star Gavin Bebble reached the 1,000 career point mark and he said since that year, he’s hoped to have this moment one day.
“Growing up, I’ve looked up to Gavin and seeing him do it always inspired me,” said Jacobson. “So it was always my goal, ever since sophomore year and losing in the regional semifinals, to get here one day.”
Jacobson finished with 24 points, leading the team in a 53-29 victory over a Ski Valley Conference opponent. And, while the milestone was certainly something to be proud of, Jacobson was even more proud of the victory; one that keeps them in the hunt for a league title.
“It felt good, it did. Getting the win was even better,” said Jacobson.

Gaylord St. Mary (7-2, 7-1 SVC) has now won seven straight games since starting the season 0-2 and, more importantly, has won seven consecutive conference matchups since losing their league opener to the current standings leader, Bellaire.
Still, with how Jacobson and the Snowbirds have been playing, they’re confident in themselves down the stretch.
“We’re feeling good. East Jordan is still in front of us, we haven’t played them yet and Bellaire is still the top dog. We still have a lot of things to work on but I’m feeling confident right now,” said Jacobson.
