Recently, students in Grawn Hall met with representatives from Auto-Owners Insurance, a Fortune 500 company with deep roots in Michigan. Founded in 1916 in Mount Pleasant before moving its headquarters to Lansing, Auto-Owners now serves customers in 26 states.
Recruiter and CMU alumnus Jacob Anglebrandt returned to campus to meet with students, answer questions, and share how Auto-Owners continues to grow its workforce.
“We hire all majors,” Anglebrandt said. “Any major that is offered here at CMU, we’d love to have a conversation. CMU does a really good job of preparing students, and we can take those transferable skills to any part of our business.”
Roles at Auto-Owners span accounting, finance, IT, marketing, human resources, and customer service. Anglebrandt emphasized that students don’t need to fit a single mold to succeed at the company.
“What makes us unique is what our customers say about us,” he said. “We believe in the work we do, but what matters most is that customers value it. That feedback tells us we’re doing a good job.”
As a regular presence at CMU career events and workshops, Auto-Owners has built strong connections with students and faculty. Anglebrandt said that giving back to the university is a natural extension of the company’s values.
“I love to come back to resume workshops, help students, and get them connected,” he said. “We want students to be a part of what we do—but more importantly, we want them to find the right home for them. If that’s Auto-Owners, we’ll make sure they feel at home. And if it’s somewhere else, that’s okay too. Maybe they’ll find us down the road.”
