Students at Youngstown State University are finding that college is more than a place to earn a degree. It’s a place to build skills, make connections and gain the experience that shapes their careers. For many Penguins, internships and hands-on learning opportunities help bridge the gap between the classroom and their future professions.
Grace Economus is one example of how YSU’s focus on experiential learning helps Penguins build confidence, gain professional experience and transition seamlessly into their careers.
When Economus began her accounting internship at Packer Thomas, she didn’t expect it to launch her full-time career before graduation. Now a full-time associate at the regional CPA and business consulting firm in Canfield, Ohio, Economus said her experience at YSU’s Williamson College of Business Administration prepared her to excel from day one.
“I was unquestionably prepared,” Economus said. “The coursework from WCBA helped me build the skills to navigate business networking as a whole. Especially taking a business professionalism class — that really set the foundation.”
During her time at YSU, Economus made the most of every opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. She was active in several organizations that strengthened her leadership skills and confidence, including Beta Gamma Sigma, where she served as president her senior year after two years as vice president.
She was also involved with Phi Kappa Phi, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and WCBA Business Leaders.
“All of these experiences helped me gain confidence to succeed in my role,” she said. “They taught me professionalism, how to lead and how to connect with people — all things that transferred directly into my internship.”
After completing her internship during her junior year, Packer Thomas offered Economus a full-time position before she began her senior year. With a job already secured, she was able to focus on finishing her degree strong and preparing for the transition into her career.
Economus credits her success to YSU’s supportive environment and dedicated faculty. “YSU really helped me prepare for this next step,” she said. “From professors to advisors, everyone at WCBA supported me and made sure I had what I needed to succeed.”
Now working full time and pursuing her MBA at YSU, Economus continues to build on the foundation she laid as an undergraduate.
“It’s amazing,” she said. “I’m learning something new every day, and I felt very prepared thanks to my experiences at YSU.”
Her advice for current students is simple: be hardworking, professional and open to learning something new every day. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions — that’s how you grow.”
