From classroom to career confidence

At Central Michigan University, students don’t just prepare for careers—they put their learning into action. For junior marketing major Kamaria Milton from Lansing, Mich, that means combining classroom skills with leadership and real-world experience.

Milton chose CMU for its strong emphasis on applied learning and internships. “I knew CMU would give me opportunities outside the classroom,” she said. “That’s what has shaped my journey so far.”

Her interest in marketing began with a curiosity about customer sales and decision-making. At CMU, that interest has grown into a career path. A highlight of her coursework has been BUS 321: Spreadsheet Data Analysis for Business with faculty member Robert Miller. “Even though it was an Excel class, it was fun and engaging because of his dedication and support,” she said. “Professors here really make students feel supported.”

That support carried into her summer internship at the Lansing Board of Water & Light, where she served as a key account intern. She applied knowledge from her core marketing courses and relied on Excel skills developed in class. “It gave me a clearer sense of what I want to do after graduation,” she said.

Beyond academics, Milton is active on campus as a member of Pi Sigma Epsilon Zeta Nu and as a residence assistant. Both roles have strengthened her leadership skills and expanded her network.

Her advice to high school students? Talk with advisors and students in the majors you’re considering. “Hearing firsthand about different paths can help you figure out what excites you or what doesn’t,” she said.

When challenges arise, Milton resets by spending time with friends or visiting home. She balances her schedule with classes, RA responsibilities, studying, and time to enjoy campus life. “I stay motivated by keeping my long-term goals in mind while remembering to have fun along the way,” she said.

Looking ahead, she hopes to build a marketing career that’s both fulfilling and impactful. For now, she credits CMU with giving her the confidence to pursue her goals. “What I’ll remember most are the professors who supported me, the friendships I built, and the Fired Up spirit that shaped my experience.”

Kamaria Milton wears a white shirt and sits in a black leather chair. She has her arms clasped to the side and she's posed looking back over her shoulder with a big smile. The background is dark.
