The University of Colorado Board of Regents have selected Fernando Lovo to lead the school’s athletic department. Lovo is the current Vice President and Director of Athletics for the University of New Mexico. Lovo joined UNM in December of 2024. Lovo has made an impact on the Lobo athletic program. Under his watch, the men’s basketball team played in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year, the men’s and women’s cross country teams finished among the top four in the nation, and the football team just went to their first bowl game in nearly 10 years. UNM President Garnett Stokes released the following statement following Colorado’s announcement: “We thank Fernando Lovo for his service to the University of New Mexico and wish him well in his next chapter. UNM Athletics has built meaningful momentum in recent years, and leadership movement is a normal outcome when programs are successful and gaining national attention. Our focus remains on sustaining that progress and identifying a leader who can build on the strong foundation already in place for our student-athletes, coaches, and programs.”Lovo’s contract with UNM was set to expire in 2029.
