Special needs students in Coweta have a new institution dedicated to individualized success.
On Aug. 4, 2025, The Lighthouse Special Education Academy opened its doors for the first time.
Located at 66 Thomas Grace Annex Lane, the academy is a specialized learning center dedicated to providing individualized education, therapeutic support and a nurturing environment for students with a range of learning differences and developmental challenges.
The academy was created in response to a massive gap in Coweta County, executive director Keri Bethea said.
“Many families raising children with disabilities were driving long distances for specialized schooling, piecing together multiple therapy appointments and searching for a Christ-centered educational option that could meet both academic and spiritual needs,” Bethea said. “The academy was born out of prayer, calling, and the desire to serve families who felt unseen and unsupported.”
Instruction at the Lighthouse Academy is rooted in the belief that every student deserves a high-quality, personalized education, Bethea said.
The academy currently serves a small cohort of six early elementary students ranging in developmental levels from mild to severe, with certified special education teachers and on-site speech, occupational, and physical therapy services.
The curriculum is tailored to meet individual learning goals while fostering social-emotional well-being and confidence.
“(It’s) faith-based, incorporating Scripture, worship, prayer and character development– flexible to each child’s pace and developmental strengths,” Bethea said.
Lauren Norris, Director of Operations, added, “We see firsthand how children thrive when given the right tools, encouragement, and community. Our goal is to make sure every family feels supported and every child is given the opportunity to succeed.”
Students who graduate, or “step up,”, from Lighthouse Academy can seamlessly transition into public school, private school, or other specialized programs, Bethea said.
Staff commemorated the academy’s opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring the Coweta Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 21. Four days later, a Fall Market and Open House event was held. Attendees were treated to local artisans, a tour of the facility and a meet and greet with academy staff.
Looking ahead, Bethea and staff are eager to provide relief and assistance to families in need.
“(We) saw a clear need for a faith-based, therapy-supported school where children could learn at their pace, receive compassionate care, and grow in confidence and Christlikeness,” Bethea said.
