CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern women’s basketball team received a career performance from Caelan Ellis, but Longwood pulled away late to hand the Buccaneers an 83-63 loss Wednesday evening in the Buc Dome.
Ellis scored a career-high 26 points to lead all scorers, including a dominant 16-point third quarter, as CSU battled back after trailing at halftime. Despite the offensive surge, Longwood’s balanced attack and a double-double by Otaifo Esenabhalu proved decisive as the Lancers improved to 11-4 on the season.
Longwood set the tone early, building momentum in the opening quarter. Charleston Southern struggled to find a consistent rhythm offensively, shooting 4-for-13 from the field, while Longwood took a 16-11 lead after one. The Lancers extended their advantage in the second quarter, outscoring CSU 20-12 to carry a 36-23 lead into halftime.
Charleston Southern responded coming out of the locker room behind Ellis’ explosive third quarter. The redshirt junior guard caught fire, scoring 16 of CSU’s 21 points in the period as the Buccaneers shot 53.3 percent from the field. However, Longwood matched the surge with 26 points of its own including nine points from Malea Brown, maintaining a 62-44 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes. Longwood remained composed down the stretch, outscoring CSU 21-19 in the fourth quarter to close out the 83-63 victory. The Lancers capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities, preventing Charleston Southern from cutting further into the deficit.
