TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Aspiring lifeguards in Tucson have an exciting opportunity to get started on their journey for summer 2026. The City of Tucson is offering a free swim test, a crucial first step for those interested in becoming lifeguards or Water Safety Instructors.
The swim test is scheduled to take place at Catalina Pool on Feb. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Passing this test is mandatory to proceed to the Star Guard Lifeguard Class. Registration for the swim test is free, and interested individuals are encouraged to sign up.
For those aiming to become lifeguards, the pay starts at $16.75 per hour. Applicants must be 15 years old by the time they apply and commit to a 24-hour class schedule. Availability for all of June and July is required, with the potential to work throughout the year. Classes will commence after January 2026.
The swim test includes a 300-yard continuous approach stroke without a tube, a 50-yard approach stroke with a rescue tube, two minutes of treading water using legs only, a 50-yard side stroke while supporting a dummy, and retrieving a 10-pound diving brick from approximately 12 feet.
Water Safety Instructors must have certification to teach swim lessons, which includes lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid Basics certifications. This certification is provided by the Starfish Aquatics Institute and involves both online and in-water training.
Trainees must be 16 years old before the first class and proficient in several swimming strokes.
