RICHMOND, Va. – Sam Dewey posted a career-high 15 points in just her second game as a Spider as the University of Richmond women’s basketball team picked up a dominant 93-39 win over visiting Morgan State in the 2024-25 home opener. With the victory, the Spiders move to 2-0 on the young season while the Bears fell to 2-1.

How it Happened
The Spiders jumped out to a strong start as Katie Hill opened the scoring with a layup, followed by another quick and-one layup from Maggie Doogan to put Richmond up 5-0. The Spider defense forced several early turnovers, as Rachel Ullstrom capitalized on a triple from a Morgan State foul, extending the lead to 8-0. Richmond continued its relentless pace throughout the quarter as Alyssa Jimenez, Dewey, Alicia Newell and Anna Camden combined for 15 points, which capped off a dominant first quarter with the Spiders ahead 34-11.
Richmond continued its momentum into the second quarter, with Ally Sweeney draining a trey and back-to-back free throws to extend the Spider lead to 39-14. Morgan State managed to trim the deficit slightly with good looks late in the second quarter, but Richmond continued to apply pressure as Camden and Newell added late layups, sending the Spiders into the locker room with a commanding 52-22 advantage.
In the third quarter, Addie Budnik and Camden opened the scoring with three easy layups to push the lead to 58-24. Despite a brief push from Morgan State, who hit a few shots from deep, Dewey responded with a layup and a free throw to push the lead to 35, 62-27 with 4:56 in the quarter. Later, Dewey hit a triple as Newell followed the play with a layup and another pair of free throws for a 74-33 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
Camden continued the Spider offensive power in the fourth quarter with a trey before Sweeney and Jimenez added to the lead for an 82-33 advantage. Richmond held the bears to only six points in the final quarter as Steph Ouderkirk collected a mid-range jumper to hand Richmond the win, 93-39.
Notes on the Game
- Sam Dewey posted a career-high 15 points, besting her previous career-high of seven vs McNesse (11/16/22). She finished the game shooting 5 of 7 from the field, 2 of 3 from deep and a perfect 3 of 3 from the charity stripe.
- Anna Camden also posted 15 points in the contest, scoring in double figures for the first time since 2022 against Michigan State (10 pts) and shot 6-7 from the floor and 3-4 from beyond the arc.
- Two other Spiders finished in double figures as Alyssa Jimenez posted 13 points and Rachel Ullstrom finished with 11 points.
- The Spiders posted the most points in a game since 12/16/23 against Liberty (W, 99-73) and scored 90 or more points for the first time since 2/28/24 against Duquesne (W, 90-74).
- Maggie Doogan posted a team-high nine rebounds while Ally Sweeney dished out five assists to lead the Spiders and Jimenez collected three thefts.
- As a team, the Spiders shot 32 of 54 (59.3%) from the floor, 10 of 23 (43.5%) from deep and 19 of 21 (90.5%) from the free throw line. In addition, the Spiders posted 40 rebounds, 20 assists, four blocks and 31 points off 24 Bear turnovers. The Spider bench also posted 57 points.
- The 15 steals from Richmond marks the highest number of steals for the Spiders since 11/10/22 against Mount St. Mary’s (16).
