DELAWARE– Delaware Governor Matt Meyer (D) announced Monday that the application deadline has been extended to May 12 for Delaware public high school students interested in serving as the next student representative on the State Board of Education.
The non-voting student member plays a key advisory role in state-level discussions on curriculum, equity, school accountability, and more. Rising juniors and seniors for the 2025–2026 school year are encouraged to apply.
“Students should have a seat at the table when it comes to decisions that affect their education,” said Meyer. “Extending the deadline gives more young leaders the opportunity to step up and help shape the future of education in Delaware.”
Applications are now due by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 12. Students must submit three essay responses and a recommendation from a teacher, principal, or school counselor. Finalists will be interviewed by a panel including representatives from the Governor’s Office and the State Board of Education.
“Providing an informed youth voice is important to the Board’s work in representing the students’ voice in Delaware,” said Shawn Brittingham, president of the State Board of Education. “We have learned much from our previous six student Board Members and value the insight that students bring to conversations.”
The selected student will serve a one-year term beginning in July 2025 and will attend monthly Board meetings, either in person or virtually, with guidance from the Board’s executive director.
