ONALASKA (WKBT) — The Coulee Region celebrated Hmong American Day with a special event at the Omni Center Saturday.
The free event honored the rich culture and contributions of Hmong Americans, while marking the 50th anniversary of the first Hmong arrivals in the United States and La Crosse County.
Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed free food, family activities and engaging cultural presentations and performances.
“Today is just a time to celebrate … and a time to just enjoy the face that it’s been 50 years,” said Mai Tia Yang, Board Secretary at the Hmong Cultural and Community Center. “When I think about going back on how much everything has changed within that 50 years, it’s really amazing.”
A highlight of the event was the Best Dressed competition, where participants of all ages showcased traditional Hmong fashion.
Hmong American Day is observed on May 14, but the event’s organizers decided to host it over the weekend to better fit with people’s schedules.
