LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – As the cold weather sets in, the City of Laredo and nearby areas are working to help keep people safe and warm. With Martin Luther King Jr. Day being a federal holiday, many offices are closed, and schools have changed their schedules. Here is the latest.
Warming Centers in Laredo
Starting Tuesday, the Haynes Recreation Center at 2102 Clark Crossing Drive will open as a warming center. The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. both Tuesday and Wednesday. Families are welcome to use the space, which offers activities like basketball and other indoor games. If the center fills up, city officials may open more locations.
In nearby areas, these warming centers are open now:
- Zapata County Pavilion
- Lopeño Civic Center
- Falcon Civic Center
- Henry Martinez Civic Center in San Ygnacio
Call ahead to confirm hours for these locations.
School Changes
Schools in the area have adjusted schedules due to the weather. Here are the updates:
- United ISD (UISD) and Laredo ISD (LISD):
- Regular classes Monday, but no after-school activities.
- No classes Tuesday.
- Delayed start Wednesday: UISD will start two hours later, and LISD will start 90 minutes later. Bus pickup times will also adjust.
- Webb Consolidated ISD:
- Early release Monday.
- No classes Tuesday or Wednesday.
- Zapata County ISD:
- Regular classes Monday.
- No classes Tuesday.
- Delayed start Wednesday, with all buses picking up students at 8:30 a.m.
- Harmony Public Schools:
- No classes Monday due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
- No classes Tuesday due to the weather.
- Catholic Schools (Mary Help, San Jose, Blessed Sacrament):
- No classes Monday for the holiday.
- Virtual learning day Tuesday.
- Delayed start Wednesday.
- United Day School:
- Regular classes Monday.
- The school will be closed on Tuesday, and the missed day will be made up later. Classes will resume as usual on Wednesday at 7:55 a.m.
- TAMIU and Laredo College:
- TAMIU was closed Monday for the holiday and will stay closed Tuesday.
- Laredo College had classes Monday but canceled them for Tuesday.
