There’s a question in the field of environmental psychology: What’s the best approach when looking to influence colleagues, friends and family to act more sustainably in their daily lives? To recycle, say, or bike to work. Researchers and other experts say relying on social norms is effective. So is modeling behaviors, to a degree. Less effective but worth a try is offering financial incentives through contests and prizes or tax breaks. Other advice includes picking your battles and starting small. Also, try to make things as easy as possible, like keeping reusable bags in the car for shopping. The less effort a new habit requires, the more likely it will stick.
