Paris 2024 champion Carlos Yulo captured the vault gold medal on Saturday (25 October), claiming his second podium finish and first win of the 2025 World Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia.
He won the floor exercise bronze on Friday (24 October) and says that pushed him to do well on the vault.
“It feels amazing,” he told Olympics.com afterward. “Yesterday, I was really feeling it, it’s a good feeling making it to the podium in third position. It gave me a lot of motivation to do well today. I’m really grateful it happened.”
On Saturday, Yulo’s two-vault average was 14.866, just clear of Armenia’s Artur Davtyan (14.833). Ukrainian Nazar Chepurnyi won the bronze medal with a 14.483 final average.
Vaulting third in the final, the Filipino star soared on his front handspring, double pike front half out. He stuck the landing, receiving a .100 bonus, and a 9.500 execution score for a total first vault score of 15.200.
Yulo’s second vault was a front handspring, front layout with two-and-a-half twists. He had a slight shuffle on the landing and scored 14.533.
It looked like it could be an easy win for Yulo until Davtyan, last to go, stuck both of his vault. In the end, he came up just short of what would have been a second world gold medal on the event.
“Arthur did so well, and he’s an amazing gymnast. Chepurnyi, also,” said Yulo. “I really enjoyed watching [Artur’s vaults].”
The win is a second global title on the apparatus for the 25-year-old and his third World crown overall.
At Paris 2024, Yulo struck gold on both the floor exercise and vault, captapulting him to superstardom.
