ONA, W.Va. (WCHS) — Four West Virginia teachers have been honored with a national award for their efforts to promote technical education and prepare the next generation of teachers.
Adam Riazi, a math and computer science teacher at Cabell Midland High School, has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, according to a news release from the West Virginia Department of Education.
The news release noted Riazi has been teaching in the state for 17 years and has been previously honored with a Computer Science Teachers Association National Educator Award and multiple National Center for Women and Information Technology Awards.
Riazi is a National Board Certified Teacher and serves as a member of Midland’s leadership and professional development teams. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and master’s in leadership studies from Marshall University.
The DOE listed three other exceptional educators outside of the Eyewitness News viewing area:
- Alicen Adkins: Science, Moorefield Middle School in Hardy County
- Renee Haines: Biology, Martinsburg High School in Berkeley County
- Kerianne Smead: Math, Morgantown High School in Monongalia County
Nationally, 336 teachers and mentors received the award this year, in addition to the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.
Honorees will receive a certificate signed by the United States president, a trip to Washington, D.C. for an awards ceremony and $10,000 from the National Science Foundation.
