M.C.I. Foods Inc. is recalling about 91,585 pounds of ready-to-eat breakfast burrito and wrap products that were shipped to schools and retail locations nationwide. The company’s Los Cabos, El Más Fino and Midamar brand products are included in the USDA’s National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall after routine testing detected possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious illness, especially in older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.
Consumers who purchased the affected items are urged not to eat them and instead discard the product or return it to the place of purchase.
The company, which is based in Santa Fe Springs, California, says it is cooperating with federal officials to determine how the contamination occurred. Anyone who experiences flu-like symptoms after eating the products should contact a healthcare provider and mention the potential for listeria exposure.
