LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – An attorney for a former Jeffersonville High School teacher who was shown in a video confronting a student in the bathroom is speaking out on his behalf.
That video began spreading on social media, leading Clark County Schools to release a statement on Facebook about their investigation. The Clark County Prosecutor’s office is also looking into the incident.
WAVE News spoke with the attorney on the case earlier in the week. Kyle Beach’s firm works on the civil side but still works closely with the prosecutor’s office. He confirmed the student had both physical trauma, with blunt force injuries, and also emotional trauma to work through from the incident.
Beach confirmed the teacher shown in the video was Casey Ritter. When WAVE looked into Ritter, we found he was hired in September under an emergency permit, meaning he is working towards a teacher’s license.
On Friday, Nov. 28, an attorney for Ritter said the former teacher was hired days before the start of the school year and was assigned to hall and restroom supervision to prevent unsafe behavior.
Attorney Larry Wilder claims Ritter saw students gathering in the bathroom and told them to disperse. Wilder said Ritter then noticed the smell of marijuana coming from a closed stall and that a student was hiding inside. That student wouldn’t come out when instructed to.
Wilder said Ritter was injured when the student slammed the stall door on his hand while he was trying to get the student to come out, and Ritter required medical treatment. The student remained combative and refused to leave the bathroom, according to Wilder. Ritter then “attempted to restrain and escort the student from the area, using additional force only as the student continued to resist.”
“Casey’s job was to keep students safe and to ensure that the bathroom did not become a place where illegal drugs were being consumed,” Wilder said. “He made reasonable efforts to carry out his job, and the student in question refused to follow Casey’s instructions.”
Wilder said he advised Ritter to resign, so he could fully defend himself without the “limitations imposed by school employment.”
