ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Asheville and Buncombe County school leaders held emergency meetings on Friday, Oct. 11, to discuss the response to Helene and the return to class.

Four Buncombe County Schools students have been reported dead from the storm. BCS officials also say that they have a significant number of faculty and staff who have lost family members and friends.
Of the 22,213 students, 21 are currently unaccounted for. However, some have relocated to different areas and have not been able to be reached.
A total of 12 BCS buses helped with evacuations. Three BCS schools were used as headquarters for out-of-area search and rescue, seven were used as sleeping quarters, and four were used by FEMA.

Students have been out of school for two weeks since Helene severely damaged the area’s infrastructure, taking out power and water services for much of the area.While power has been restored for many, water remains an issue for those on Asheville city water.
