MEMPHIS, Tenn. – FOX13 constantly hears from parents saying there are not enough activities for kids to be involved in to keep them out of trouble. Shelby County leaders are trying to change that. The county recently launched the Art for All: Culture Pass Program. County Mayor Lee Harris told FOX13 it’s a way for family’s to have fun in a safe environment.
“Families, kids, they’re always looking for something to do,” said Harris. “Unfortunately, sometimes going outside and playing is not like it used to be. Sometimes it can be a hazard, but these are really, really safe places.”
This is the first year for this program. Right now, the Culture Pass is only available for elementary school students and up to three family members. The pass allows the student and their family free entry into 30 different attractions.
“It’s an opportunity for kids to learn about the history and legacy of Memphis and Shelby County. We’ve got a lot of things going on,” said Harris.
Katherine McCracken has two young boys. She told FOX13 she always makes sure her kids stay busy, so they don’t get into trouble.
“If they get something to do to occupy their time, they mind then maybe they will stray away from that type of stuff,” said McCracken.
The Culture Pass can only be used for one free entry at each location. It doesn’t expire until the end of this year. Parents can pick up a Culture Pass at 18 public libraries or at any community center. You can register the pass at 901ArtforAll.com and see all the attractions available to visit.
Harris told FOX13 as the program grows, he hopes to make it available to all students.
“We’d love to do that. We’d love to be able to do that, I think you will see that,” said Harris.
Shelby County also has a similar program called Art for All: Summer Pass. It’s similar to the Culture Pass, but the Summer Pass is available for all county students and their families. You get free entry into 11 attractions, and you can visit however many times you want. The Summer Pass is only available from May 26th through August 1st.
