The Lagos-based Aliko Dangote Foundation has pledged one trillion naira ($688 million) over 10 years in support education in Nigeria, Bloomberg.com reports.
In particular, the foundation aims to focus on students in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and math) and well as on teacher training and the education of girls. To that end, the foundation will target students most vulnerable to dropping out and those whose potential can drive community transformation. Beginning with 45,000 scholars in 2026, the foundation expects to eventually reach 1.33 million students.
According to UNICEF, Nigeria is home to 20 percent of the world’s out-of-school children.
“We cannot allow financial hardship to silence the dreams of our young people,” said Dangote. “This is not only charity. This is a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future. Every child we keep in school strengthens our economy. Every student we support reduces inequality.”
