As part of Goal Seven of the university’s Ten for One strategic vision—to become a national employer of choice, offering pathways to professional and personal development for all staff—Meredith Stewart, vice president and chief human resources officer, announced in March the introduction of myCareer, a technology resource focused on enhancing the career development experience for staff.

“Think of it as JHU’s internal LinkedIn,” Stewart said of the concept. “It will help you build your personal career profile, explore internal opportunities, and access personalized career navigation support and key development resources—all in one place.”

Following a pilot phase with invited participants, all staff can now access myCareer and explore the personalized, centralized hub for navigating their professional growth.

This new platform builds on the foundation of the university’s major career growth initiatives—Career Architecture, enhanced learning opportunities offered through myLearning, and the resources of the Center for Staff Life Design—and brings them together in one seamless experience.

All about myCareer

Here’s what you can do with myCareer:

  • Showcase your experience. To begin to assess your skills, follow prompts from the platform to complete a profile by adding work experience, education, skills, and accomplishment.
  • Plan your career. Explore the Career Architecture structure and see how your current role could evolve in the future. You also can complete a skills assessment, which will recommended courses in myLearning that will help you develop the skills you need for your career journey.
  • Create your development plan (formerly Professional Development Plans in myPerformance with SuccessFactors) for your current position or to help you prepare for a future role using the resources within myCareer.

New internal job search

Starting in November, the job navigator section of myCareer will be where staff will apply for new JHU roles. While the number of positions available today may be limited, this new platform will enhance internal mobility in the future.

External applicants will see a different side of myCareer, tailored for them. A new JHU Eightfold Talent Acquisition platform will provide an enhanced outside applicant experience for staff jobs, enabling candidates to create profiles and be matched to openings that best suit their experience. In addition, recruiters will have new ways to communicate with candidates, such as by texting and through proactive campaigns. When this system launches in November, a new career site, careers.jhu.edu, will also be introduced, replacing jobs.jhu.edu.

Hiring managers and designees will receive information and training on the enhanced hiring process within the new JHU Eightfold recruiting system over the next few months.

“We are excited that myCareer and the new recruiting experience are finally available to staff,” Stewart says. “With all the work HR has done the last few years with Career Architecture, Center for Staff Life Design, and myLearning, this new, innovative approach is groundbreaking, bringing everything together to support staff’s careers.”
