Twists and turns with no end in sight. That is how I have reached this latest incarnation of my media career spanning 35+ years. This journey has been thrilling, maddening, harsh and ego-realigning.
From the age of 19 — while attending Concordia University, where I would attain a B.A., Specialization in Communication Studies and simultaneously launching my on-air and production offerings at CJAD — to present day 54, where I continue to entertain and inform at K1037 in Kahnawake, The Suburban has become the latest platform where I look to learn and excel. The broadcaster in me has not been defined by the industry that has been my home for what will very soon be four decades, rather I have chosen the paths that have permitted me to define my own destiny. That has always been the success plan: uncertain certainty.
I have had cordial discussions with The Suburban for years, through Publisher and friend Michael Sochaczevski and with the reputable, ‘gentleman with panache’, Beryl Wajsman: this time around, the timing was impeccable. I had recently thrown my hat in the ring in municipal politics, running for district one councillor in Pincourt, where I came up short of my goal. The experience was an humbling learning curve, where I exposed myself, my vulnerabilities, in an effort to serve the greater good. And that is when this latest call come in and the timing was perfect.
Working on behalf of a marginalized community in Kahnawake and having grown-up in an all-too-often ostracized minority collective, I have been a strong voice for truth, truism and honesty. The Suburban’s written platform is now the perfect conduit for my insights, personality and experience to shine. There will be some hiccups, a few missteps and the occasional apology, but that will pale in comparison to the passion I will bring to the table and based on the warmth I have felt from this tight, professional team at The Suburban since the announcement was cemented to join the newspaper and digital informer, this was unequivocally the right decision.
