This week’s Caller-Times Student of the Week winner is Emma Lynes, a student at Calallen High School.
Participating Coastal Bend high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors nominated high school students they say have shown outstanding academic achievement and community service, and readers voted in an online poll.
Emma garnered 49% of the votes. Runner-up Kaitlyn Guajardo, of Banquete High School, garnered about 42% of the votes.
Emma is currently the senior class treasurer, president of Calallen TV and the chief engineer responsible for putting on the daily news show at the high school.
Emma’s nomination from Calallen High School described her as being committed to excellence and ensuring that all of the students who run the news show “strive to be the best they can be each and every time they film.”
Emma is also a member of the girls soccer team.
“Her leadership skills and dedication to both athletics and academics are truly commendable,” said her coach, Sarah Pipkin-Love. “It’s great to see young athletes who excel not only on the pitch but also in their studies. She’s clearly making a positive impact both as a player and a role model for her teammates. We are extremely fortunate to have her as part of the soccer program.”
Emma plans to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio or the University of Oklahoma to major in biomedical science to hopefully become an orthopedic surgeon.
Also nominated was Kaiden Mui, of Flour Bluff High School.
The nominations for next week’s poll will be published online at Caller.com on Monday morning. Voting will run from Monday morning through noon Thursday.
Nominations of high school students are accepted each week. They must be sent by educators from an official school email address to studentoftheweek@caller.com.
