HAMLER, Ohio (WTVG) – Students probably don’t want to hear this, but some school districts are already talking about make-up days for all the school they’ve missed recently.
The idea is to warn parents now, in case they’re making plans for when temperatures are a little warmer.
Schools report the hours of instruction to the state, but places like Patrick Henry have contractual obligations with a certain number of days. Now the word is out about possibly going longer into May.
No school at Patrick Henry, Monday marks calamity day number seven already and we’re not through with January.
“Unfortunately, in our school district, this has happened a few years in a row. I think parents have a general understanding that our make-up days are usually at the end of the year, as they have that in mind as ‘Hey are getting things around for the summer,’” said Superintendent Josh Biederstedt, Ph.D.
Once they hit eight, make-up days come into play. Monday, the district went to Facebook to tell parents that more days could be added.
“I would just ask that the parents are willing to be flexible and work with us as we’re working through the winter,” said Biederstedt.
Different districts take all different steps. Eastwood closed Monday but had a virtual learning day as they began to make up calamity days. At Otsego, district leaders have posted this note about virtual learning days that will be coming after they hit the threshold on calamity days.
While lots of conditions are getting better for some school districts, we wait to see what the next couple of days bring as those districts prepare for potentially more closings.
“Our bus drivers are great here in Patrick Henry. They do a great job, but there are other people on the road with them. We think about all those things when we’re out there and try to make the best decision for us here at Patrick Henry,” said Biederstedt.
Fog plays a role, too, not just on Monday. Districts like Patrick Henry have already make-upled for fog this school year, so those days add to the total.
