Knock knock! Who’s there? Boooo! Boo who? Don’t cry, Boo, Halloween is just around the corner and pumpkins are showing up all over the place! Great candy and fun games are happening soon!
I know, very corny (candy corny?). I’ll stop, I’ll stop. Made you smile, didn’t I?
I’m not sure where time has flown, but it is time to break out the fall decorations and know where the Christmas ones are so you are ready for all the holiday fun and celebrations.
With all the various holidays approaching, I am so excited that the family gatherings will be plentiful the next three months. Great food will be served and memories made. The most special memories involve our loved ones, family and friends.
The El Campo Branch Library is a busy place to make fun memories the next few months. Decorated pumpkins are in the Library right now for people to view and oooh and aahhh over. How these children come up with their awesome creativeness just astonishes me. Be sure to stop in and see what young creative geniuses can come up with.
The Great Pumpkin Bash awards will be handed out to the participants from 4-6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14. Children who entered their pumpkins are asked to pick them up during this time. Prize winners will be notified and photos taken with the award-winning pumpkins.
On Halloween, Oct. 31, children are invited to visit the library in their costumes to trick-or-treat with the librarians. Goodie bags will be given to the trick-or-treaters and there will be a take-home craft to choose from. The Halloween fun will begin at 3 p.m. and last until 6 p.m., or until all the goodies are gone.
The annual Scholastic Fall Book Fair is scheduled to begin on Oct. 23 and run through Nov. 2, during the library’s regular business hours. This is a great opportunity to stock up on fun books for gifts and for pleasure.
Medicare Open Enrollment begins soon and the Houston-Galveston Area Council on Aging’s counselor, Alex Rischan, is ready to help patrons with their Medicare needs. She will have a short program explaining the Medicare changes at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Mayor’s Room at the Library.
After this informative meeting, she will meet with patrons one-on-one to offer advice and answer questions about Medicare and any person’s specific needs.
Gulf Coast Reads: On the Same Page is an annual regional reading initiative focused on promoting the simultaneous reading or listening to a selected title by those living along the upper Texas Gulf Coast. This year’s book, “Night Will Find You” by Julia Heaberlin, will be showcased at each of the four branch libraries for patrons to enjoy.
There are several copies available to check out and explore the story of the relationship between a Texas scientist and a Fort Worth police officer. A chance encounter earlier in life comes full circle when the two team up to solve a cold case disappearance. The teaser for the book is intriguing and invites readers to solve the mystery.
With the elections and all the political turmoil happening now, be sure to make your vote count either during the early voting, Oct. 21 through Nov. 1, or on Election Day, Nov. 5.
It is a privilege to be able to vote and have the opportunity to make political changes through our electoral system. America has many freedoms that other countries are denied and having a say about government officials is truly a privilege and a freedom. Use this opportunity to make your opinions heard.
November is the month for Thanksgiving, on a national level and a personal level. The El Campo Branch Library has a tradition of honoring our veterans for their service to us and our country with a Veteran’s Day Open House/Appreciation. This year it will be from 10 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
There will be light refreshments served and the public is invited to stop in and offer their appreciation to the veterans attending. A token of thanks will be given to the attending military people. The morning will begin with the pledge and a prayer, as well as a few words from the current Legion Commander.
Words can never express the gratitude we should feel for the sacrifices made by these men and women. Many gave up part of their youth to serve this nation, either state-side or overseas, away from families and loved ones, alone in a foreign land.
Be thankful for every day we have to share with someone we care about. It doesn’t have to be big trips or huge gatherings. Each hug and each shared moment is a treasure unto itself. While it might seem trivial today, years from now these encounters may bring you peace and joy in the specialness of the ordinary.
Boo careful out there, the witches and ghosts and headless horsemen are looking to scare the scream out of you. Halloween is coming so fast it’s frightening.
