The district is dealing with a $60 million budget shortfall driven by declining enrollment.
GOLDEN, Colo. — About 50 Jeffco Public Schools employees learned this week that they will no longer have jobs after the current school year due to budget cuts.
The district said on its website that approximately 139 positions will be reduced from department budgets, 90 of them due to vacancies from retirement. About 50 employees were notified over the past week that their positions will be “discontinued” for the 2026-2027 school year.
According to the message, the district’s budget plan includes reductions across several areas including food and nutrition services, operations, special education, teaching and learning, and financial services.
It’s part of a plan to deal with a $60 million budget deficit. The district said over the past four years, it has experienced an enrollment decline of more than 5%, or 4,259 fewer students, driven by demographic changes and lower birth rates.
The district said it will look at individual school budgets beginning in January.
