ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Bills Mafia is celebrating after a thrilling victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, bouncing back after last week’s loss against division rivals the Miami Dolphins.
But it’s not just Western New York that’s celebrating. News10NBC’s Kristi Blake happened to run into some Bills fans at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport who traveled to the game from Mexico. They brought part of their Mexican culture to the game, wearing Luchador masks, a tribute to traditional Mexican wrestlers.
One of the fans, Miguel Chavez, has been traveling to Bills games for about five years, including to Los Angeles, Los Vegas, and Phoenix. Last year, for the first time, he traveled with his wife to Buffalo for a game. This year, he brought a bigger group.
The group traveled from Mexico, flying out of California and bouncing around the country to get to some layovers. They landed in Rochester because it was cheaper compared to Buffalo. Then, they drove up to Buffalo, all to be a part of Bills Mafia.
“If you ever come to Mexico, we are so friendly to you. I think that’s one of the reasons we love them,” Chavez said. “Now that we met the people from Buffalo, we are so friendly. We are so helpful. Like I say, if you ever come to Mexico, you want to feel at home. I’m pretty sure. And what we show, Luchadores is something from Mexico, from the culture of Mexico. So we want to show something from Mexico.”
The group customized each Luchador mask to show off their Bills spirit. They said the Bills’ defense could use some work, but they think the Bills will go all the way this year.
