(ABC 6 News) – In a show of the strength of diversity at Mayo High School, students celebrated all of the cultures that make up the student body with their annual “Culture Day” event.
From Somalia to Scotland, nearly 30 different cultures were represented through clothing, food, music, and items showed off in the halls of the school.
It’s been about five years since “Culture Day” got started, showcasing the many cultures found among the student population.
Organizers say it only gets easier to set up each year, especially with how engaged the students get.
“Now that it’s an annual thing, every single group is always looking so far forward to this so we really just have to put out flyers and spread the word out and soon so many groups will come together,” said junior Maria Villavicencio, event coordinator for the school’s Equity Team that puts everything together.
For the students who participate in showing off their culture, not only is it a chance to connect with their heritage but it also gives them a chance to educate their peers about where they and their family are from.
“I think it’s a good way to represent people’s culture and heritage,” said freshman Ahmed Hamad. “I want them to learn about the country, like be aware of the stuff happening in it.”
Fellow freshman Yasir Ahmed is particularly happy with how the entire school pitches in to make the most of the event.
“I feel proud of like all the people that came out to come show their culture and how a lot of people bring their food about how everybody came together,” he said.
While “Culture Day” only lasts a few hours during the school day, the event actually comes before the larger “Culture Night” set to take place in February.
For that event the whole community will be invited to see what the students have to offer.
