1. Why did you decide to return to school for a masters degree?

Education has always been a cornerstone in my life. Growing up, I understood that higher education was not just a goal, but a gateway to opportunities I wanted to create for myself and my family. Being the first generation in my family to earn a bachelor’s degree is a milestone I cherish deeply because it represents perseverance, sacrifice, and breaking new ground. It fuels my commitment to continually grow and inspire others who may face similar challenges and woman that look like me.

2. Why did you pick the M.A. in Sport and Athletic Administration (MASAA) and Gonzaga?

When I was exploring colleges, Gonzaga stood out because of its unique Sports Management program, a field I was passionate about. What really cemented my decision was the connection I made through Gonzaga’s women’s basketball program. Seeing how the program nurtured successful careers and supported students beyond the classroom made me realize that this was a place where I could thrive. The MASAA program, in particular, has been transformative, providing me not only with academic knowledge but with real-world skills and connections that have profoundly shaped my professional journey.

3. What do you do for work?

In my current role with the Portland Fire, the 15th WNBA expansion team, I thrive on the diversity and dynamism of my day-to-day responsibilities. Managing Business Operations means I get to wear many hats, overseeing departments across the front office, acting as a crucial liaison between our team and the league, and leading the Brand Marketing efforts. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to innovate, collaborate, and build a team culture that reflects the values and aspirations of the league.

4. How has MASAA set you up for success in your career?

The MASAA program set the foundation for my success by blending theory with practice. It offered a curriculum that was relevant, forward-thinking, and aligned with industry demands. More importantly, it pushed me to think critically, adapt quickly, and lead with confidence, skills that have become essential as I navigate the fast-paced world of professional sports.

5. What skills did you develop in the program and how have they helped you in your current role?

Among the many skills I acquired, the ability to seamlessly apply classroom lessons to real-life scenarios has been a game changer. Working as a Graduate Assistant with Gonzaga Women’s Basketball gave me hands-on experience managing operations, supporting athletes, and understanding the nuances of team dynamics. This exposure allowed me to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional execution, giving me an edge that many peers might not have.

6. What return on your investment have you seen so far? i.e Financial, skills, promotion, etc.

When people ask about the value of investing in further education, I share my experience of how it’s paid off in unexpected ways. Beyond the financial return, such as a promotion within the first month at Portland Fire, the education I received gave me the confidence, network, and perspective needed to excel. The experience at Gonzaga wasn’t just about earning a degree, it was about transforming my approach to leadership and problem-solving, preparing me for real-world success.

7. What was your experience with the faculty like?

My interactions with faculty members have been one of the most rewarding parts of my academic journey. Building genuine relationships with professors allowed me to seek mentorship, receive constructive feedback, and explore my potential beyond the classroom. Dr. Turcott and Kristen Kavon, in particular, has been an incredible mentors, providing guidance and encouragement that helped me navigate challenges and stay focused on my goals.

8. What internships did you do and how did that experience help you decide what you wanted to do for your career?

Basketball has always been close to my heart, and although my dream of playing professionally shifted, it opened doors to other avenues within sports. Interning with UVU’s athletics program gave me insight into the operations side of sports, while my post-graduation internship with the NFL broadened my perspective on the business of sport at the highest level. Through the MASAA program, I further honed my skills as a graduate assistant with the baseball team and gained marketing experience with the Golden State Valkyries. These diverse roles enriched my understanding of the industry and uniquely prepared me to contribute meaningfully to building the Portland Fire from the ground up.

9. What advice would you give to someone considering Gonzaga’s MASAA program?

A valuable piece of advice I received, and wholeheartedly embrace, is: “You get what you put in.” This mindset has driven me to fully engage with every aspect of the MASAA program, from leveraging professors’ expertise to connecting with alumni and utilizing all available resources. I encourage anyone pursuing this path to do the same, as the program’s value truly multiplies when you immerse yourself in it.

10. Why work in sport?

Honestly a short and sweet answer to this for me. I work in sport because it’s where passion meets purpose. Through my journey, I’ve learned that sport is more than entertainment; it’s community, identity, and influence. Sport has given me a platform to contribute to something bigger than myself and to help continue building this league. I believe in its power to inspire change, empower women, and create lasting legacy. This game has given me so much, and I’m committed to giving back.
