After just 39 days in the head coach role, Ange Postecoglou has been sacked from Nottingham Forest.
The English Premier League (EPL) team confirmed the news in a blunt statement issued on Sunday morning, less than an hour after Forest lost 3-0 to Chelsea.
“Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect,” the statement reads.
“The Club will make no further comment at this time.”
Postecoglou is yet to make a public statement.
In Postecoglou’s short tenure at the football club, now the record for the shortest reign as head coach in the EPL, the former Australian coach oversaw two draws and six defeats.
Postecoglou’s appointment was already a contentious one for Forest and football fans, given that he replaced Nuno Espírito Santo who last season took the team to a surprise seventh place finish. Though they missed out on a Champions League spot on the final day of last season, Forest still qualified for European competition for the first time in almost three decades.
Following today’s defeat, Forest currently sit at 18th spot and just three points from last place.
Postecoglou was sacked from Tottenham Hotspur back in June after months of speculation. In a statement, the club said that “the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season.
After joining Tottenham in 2023, the Melbourne-raised coach guided them to a 1-o victory over Manchester United in last month’s Europa League Final – the club hadn’t won a European trophy for over 40 years.
Postecoglou previously secured several major honours with Scottish club Celtic, whose fans still hold him in the highest regard, and guided Australia to the 2014 World Cup.
