Cal State Fullerton’s Mathematics and Science Teachers Initiative, the College of Education, the Foundation Level Mathematics program, the Department of Secondary Education, and the Department of Elementary and Bilingual Education invite Titans to an Ed Week 2025 event that features a film screening of the documentary “Counted Out.”

The film screening will take place Oct. 24 from 4-7:45 p.m. in Mihaylo Hall, Room 1502. The Math and Social Justice Mixer event, from 4-5 p.m., will provide attendees with the opportunity to connect with educators and explore the intersection of mathematics and equity. The documentary screening will begin at 5 p.m. and will be followed by an interactive discussion and breakout groups from 6:45-7:30 p.m. The closing remarks will take place from 7:30-7:45 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and all CSUF faculty, staff, students and community members are invited.

“Counted Out” investigates the biggest crises of the current era, including political polarization, racial and economic inequity, a global pandemic and climate change, through an unexpected lens — mathematics. Combining personal stories, examples of how mathematics connects to the systemic erosion of democracy and an interview with civil rights legend Bob Moses, the film shows what’s at risk if society maintains the status quo.

“Counted Out” challenges viewers by asking: “Do they want a United States in which most people don’t consider themselves ‘math people?’ Or do they want a country where everyone can understand the math that undergirds society and can help shape it?”

Attendees will learn how they can make a difference through CSUF’s credential pathways, including multiple subject credentials for grades TK-8, foundation level mathematics for grades 5-9, and single subject credentials for grades 7-12 in mathematics, science or computer science.

For more information, contact Theodore Chao, assistant professor of elementary and bilingual education, and the MSTI program at msti@fullerton.edu.
