Star City News is at Woodland Elementary School talking with students and faculty about the Scholastic Book Fair that’s happening this week.
This is Woodland’s first scholastic fair of the year. The Scholastic Book Fair is all put on by the PTO team at Woodland.
Kids can come in every morning and check out the books in addition to certain times in the evening for parents.
Star City spoke with the president of PTO at Woodland, Tina Chrust, about the impact of the book fair.
“The money that we earn here at the book fair, our teachers get a portion of that back and they can come and spend money on books for their classroom,” Chrust said. “We get a percentage back. Each of them. It’s about 41 teachers that we give money back here at our school to come and shop here at the book fair.”
The impact isn’t just on teachers but also on a literary level for students.
“When the students come, they pick books and then they can go and take tests on the books. It helps build the reading level of the student, and they can learn to read, and it can go up in a level,” Chrust added. “It helps them see the levels that they’re achieving and know that, ‘Hey, I’m moving up and I’m doing better and I’m reading better.’ I think that’s great for the students.”
Some 5th-graders couldn’t agree more.
“I think it’s a really good reward, because we’ve been really, really good in school,” student Valeria said.
“It makes me want to read more books,” Arlo added.
Addie also mentioned, “I’m interested in the posters and the books because reading is really fun.”
The book fair lasts until Oct. 17, and the students at Woodland can’t wait to get their hands and brains on some literature.
