The Miami Carnival has returned to South Florida for another year, where attendees will experience a week full of activities that lead up to the parade of bands.
The event kicked off on Saturday with the Jr. Carnival, also known as the “Kiddies Carnival,” where the focus was to introduce the next generation into the culture of Mas and Carnival.
Three more events are left during the Miami
Pan Jamboree
Attendees will hear performances from steel pan bands as they perform traditional Caribbean music.
In past events, pan nights featured a competition, where judges from Trinidad and Tobago were in attendance.
The event will take place on Friday at Central Broward Park from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
J’OUVERT
This event is what starts Carnival, and it starts bright and early as performers covered with mud, oil, or other past materials dance through the streets with calypso or saca bands playing.
J’ouvert is French for daybreak.
The performance will take place on Saturday at Central Broward Regional Park from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Mas Parade + Concert
Miami Carnival concludes with an all-day performance by Masquerader Bands, which are groups of parade-goers who are dressed in elaborate costumes.
During the performance, parade-goers will dance and “jump up, the parade together as music is playing from a live music truck.
There could be up to 30 different sections in one band.
The event takes place on Sunday at Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
