Normal activities resumed at the University of Delaware after students were evacuated from three buildings on campus on Tuesday, due to police activity.
Before noon on Tuesday, campus officials sent an alert to students saying that the Gore Hall, Sharp Lab and Mitchell Hall buildings were evacuated due to police activity.
“Police activity in the area of Gore Hall, Sharp Lab, and Mitchell Hall. Please evacuate Gore Hall, Sharp Lab, and Mitchell Hall. Avoid the area and follow all instructions from police. If you see something, say something. Call 911 to report suspicious activity. Go to http://www1.udel.edu/police/services/safety-tips.html for more safety tips,” read the full alert sent to students on Tuesday.
Contacted for comment, a spokesperson for the university said the evacuations were due to “a potential campus safety incident.”
“UD Police are investigating a report of a potential campus safety incident and, out of an abundance of caution, evacuated Gore Hall, Sharp Lab and Mitchell Hall to prioritize the safety of our University community. Per UD Police, please avoid the area for now and anticipate traffic impacts nearby. The University will provide updates as more information becomes available,” the school’s statement read.
Around 2 p.m. Tuesday, officials announced the situation at the school was resolved and normal activity could resume. They have not yet provided further details on the nature of the initial “safety incident.” However, NBC10 is working to learn more.
Also on Tuesday, Delaware State University was evacuated and classes were canceled, due to a bomb threat.
