On Wednesdays, we’ll introduce the students who make up Year 10 of High School Confidential, powered by Danville Area Community College. Today: Armstrong Township’s Aubrey Self.
The first hint that Aubrey was interested in teaching: At 3 years old, she set up her bedroom as a classroom.
“I had three whiteboard easels set up in front of my carpet. I had a teacher’s desk and chair that I got from my great grandpa. For my birthday I always ask for school supplies and classroom supplies so I had bulletin boards that I set up with things like birthdays and learning objectives,” she said. “I had tables and chairs to use as my desks in my classroom that were always set up and ready to teach with nametags for everyone that played school with me.”
The senior will indeed study elementary education in college. “I just love to be around kids and the fact that I witnessed how some kids are when they come from rough home lives made me realize I needed to become a teacher and that was my calling,” she said.
Aubrey runs cross-country and track, is an editor on the yearbook staff, president of student council and vice president of National Honor Society. “I’m not going to lie: being involved in a lot can be stressful at times but I love doing all of it,” she said. “I love planning things and creating things for the students to have fun with and to have the community involved in.”
She’s a proud resident of tiny Potomac, the site of a first-time homecoming parade on Oct. 9. The lineup includes floats made by community members. “They are going all out,” she said. “I think people are excited for this new tradition that student council is bringing to (Potomac).”
