ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Baldwin Richardson Foods Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic is back in Rochester Saturday, bringing more than just football. Organizers say it’s a chance for students and families to connect with Historically Black Colleges and Universities and experience the culture that comes with them.
The game will take place at the Rochester Community Sports Complex, expected to draw thousands from across the country. The event features Central State University and Lane College, along with their bands and alumni, all in one place. Teams are set to practice on Friday, ahead of Saturday’s kickoff. After the game, fans can also look forward to a head-to-head battle of the bands.
“It’s an honor to have a classic in Rochester. I believe we’re the only classic in the state. And to have it here, in the home of Frederick Douglass, it’s an opportunity for these kids to experience the HBCU culture, which is very important,” said Jimmie Highsmith Jr., CEO of Xperience Live Music Group LLC.
“One thing that people don’t realize is that these institutions are very diverse. Howard is only 65% African American. The rest is general market and, you know, Latino and Asian. We are putting together resources for our children, that is what this is about,” expressed Varick Baiyina, CEO of Xperience Live LLC.
“To ignite and form an impact not only on the field, but in the community as well. We want to use this game as a vehicle,” expressed Jamar Harp, coach of Lane College.
“We coming here to play football and walk out of here with this dub. If they plan on winning, we are going to ruin that,” added Marcell Cutright, running back for Lane College.
Game day kicks off Saturday, Sept. 27. Events include an 8 a.m. tailgate, 12:30 p.m. welcome and coin toss, and a 1 p.m. kickoff. Tickets are available at the door for $25.
