Coastal Bend through the eyes of the Caller-Times

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times promises to highlight our community through powerful journalism showcasing the beautiful Coastal Bend.

Zane Eden co-founded a metal building construction company, which he devoted time to after school and on weekends during his time as a Calallen High School senior.

Megan Moore had made progress toward a career in health care before finishing her time at Banquete High School. She was on track to earn an Associate of Science degree along with her high school diploma and had phlebotomy and EKG certifications under her belt.

Sonya Tobias, of Robstown Early College High School, earned a full tuition scholarship at Texas Christian University to study music education and planned to become a band director.

These are just a few of the outstanding Coastal Bend high school students who were nominated by educators at their schools for the Caller-Times Student of the Week poll last school year.

Through Student of the Week, the Caller-Times aimed to shine a light on high school students who made waves on their campuses and impressed teachers and school leaders.

However, the Caller-Times is making changes to the feature — now to be known as Students of the Month — this school year.

One: We are removing the voting aspect of Student of the Week. We don’t want competition to deter educators from nominating students who deserve to be in the spotlight.

Two: As the new name indicates, the feature will now be monthly instead of weekly.

We hope to encourage greater participation from teachers and staff in our area school districts, whom we rely on to nominate students. Just as importantly, we want readers to be excited about learning more about the student excellence in our own backyard.

We will feature any high school students who are nominated, as long as we have enough information about that student’s accomplishments, their grade level and a photo of the student that does not have copyright restrictions. We will even feature multiple students from the same school in one article.

We will only accept nominations of high school students sent by educators from an official school email address.

Send nominations to students@caller.com.

The first batch of honorees will be announced in an article on Oct. 6.

Nominations must be sent no later than noon on Oct. 3 to be included in the Oct. 6 article.

Vicky Camarillo is the executive editor of the Caller-Times.
