CDC’s Global HIV and TB Laboratories - An Investment in Health Security

In laboratories across the globe, the fight against HIV and TB relies on strong infrastructure and skilled professionals.

CDC’s Global HIV and TB Laboratories – An Investment in Health Security

For over four decades, CDC has been a global leader in building efficient, adaptable, and sustainable national laboratory systems. These labs serve as the backbone of defense against diseases like HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and emerging infectious disease threats. More than just identifying cases, laboratories guide effective treatment, curb the spread of drug resistance, and provide the early warnings needed to stop outbreaks at their source – saving millions of American lives and protecting economic interests.

The scale of this work is a testament to its impact. With support from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), CDC’s efforts have strengthened over 14,000 labs and point-of-care sites globally. This support has enabled over 48 million HIV diagnostic tests and 620,000 rapid molecular tests for HIV-associated TB and drug resistance, directly contributing to a safer and more prepared world.

Innovative Solutions to Detect HIV Drug Resistance

CDC is a leader in detecting and preventing the spread of HIV drug resistance, which jeopardizes effective treatment for millions globally as antiretroviral therapy use expands. Recognizing the critical need for accessible monitoring, CDC developed cost-effective genotyping assays and innovative testing methods that dramatically reduced test costs by 85% and enabled widespread surveillance in over 75 countries. Read the story.

Transforming Global Drug-Resistant TB Detection and Response

TB remains the world’s deadliest infectious disease, with drug-resistant TB posing a formidable, harder-to-treat threat that undermines elimination efforts. CDC’s groundbreaking initiative to implement next-generation genomic sequencing in India is providing crucial insights into drug resistance patterns and transmission of drug-resistant strains, leading to the country’s first national drug-resistant TB sequencing database and a country-specific mutation catalog. Read the story.

Going the Distance: Bridging Gaps in Kenya’s HIV Care

Through PEPFAR, CDC partnered with the Government of Kenya to revolutionize critical HIV testing; dramatically reducing test result times from weeks to days, saving lives and improving treatment. Beyond HIV, these newly equipped laboratories now test for multiple diseases, creating a sustainable, broader testing platform that boosts public health and informs global outbreak response. Read the story.

Closing the Gap: Finding Untreated TB Cases

Each year, 2.7 million people with TB go undiagnosed and untreated. CDC’s Clinic Laboratory Interface Continuous Quality Improvement (CLICQ!) mentorship program empowers clinics and laboratories to collaborate more effectively in identifying and closing gaps in TB diagnosis and treatment. The initiative has led to remarkable improvements – including a 20-day reduction in treatment delays in Uganda – ultimately strengthening global health security and accelerating TB elimination efforts.
