First day jitters are not reserved for first-year students only. Anyone can feel anxious the Monday morning of the start of the semester. The excitement of new classes, meeting professors and getting back into the rhythm of campus life can feel overwhelming.
To prepare for the beginning of the year, consider planning a morning routine as it may help calm your nerves. Here are some simple steps you can take to ease your way into the fall semester.
The Night Before
To prepare for the morning, pick out your outfit of choice ahead of time. Consider laying out everything you’ll need, from shoes to accessories, so you can simply get dressed and go.
Try to pack your bag with everything you might need for the next day. Things as simple as hand sanitizer and chapstick can save the day if you need it. Also, make sure all electronics are plugged into their respective chargers, so they’ll be ready for a full day ahead.
Set your alarm at least an hour before you need to leave for your first class to give yourself ample amount of time in the morning. Also, keep in mind that a full eight hours of sleep is the best way to wake up feeling refreshed.
Waking Up
Once the alarm goes off, hit snooze. It’s not the nine extra minutes of sleep that makes hitting snooze so valuable, it’s the thought that you’re stealing extra rest.
After getting up, make your bed. Not just because it’s proven to boost productivity, but also so your future self can enjoy coming back to a neatly made bed that night.
Wash your face and take your time with skincare or makeup. Choose whatever routine makes you feel refreshed and confident. If you can, play some of your favorite music in the background. The right playlist can turn a rushed morning into something that feels lighter and more enjoyable.
Make yourself a nice breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day. A balanced breakfast gives you the energy and focus you need to start classes strong.
Before Heading Out The Door
Before you leave your dorm or apartment, check your bag to make sure there is no chance of forgetting anything. Your computer, tablet, notebooks, keys and water bottles are all things you do not want to leave behind. Also, glance over your schedule to make sure you have a clear plan of what the day entails.
Try to give yourself a ten to fifteen minute buffer once you leave, so that walking to campus doesn’t feel timed and rushed.
With everything in place, you’re ready to step into the semester feeling prepared and confident. Starting your semester calmly isn’t just for the first day, it’s about creating a routine to set habits for the whole term.
