TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — Aug. 20 marks a significant milestone for Tucson as the city celebrates its 250th anniversary. The founding of the Presidio San Agustin del Tucson in 1775 is being commemorated with events that honor the city’s rich history and vibrant culture.
City officials and community members of all ages gathered to celebrate Tucson’s past, present and future.
News 4 Tucson asked Tucsonans: How would you describe Tucson?
“Bright, optimistic, friendly,” said Ken Karrels.
“Community, cultural, parties, family,” said Dora Renkert.
“People fall in love with our culture, with our art, with our history, with our food,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero.
These words are at the heart of why we are celebrating 250 years, for the city and for the people that fill it.
“We moved here in 1977. We’ve been here ever since,” said Karrels.
The roots of Tucson go beyond its 250-year history, as highlighted by Renkert.
“I’m Tohono O’odham and that’s desert people. We’ve been here since time immemorial. Actually, Arizona and Tucson are named from my people,” said Renkert. “Once you know the culture, you can understand a lot of what happens in Tucson.”
Alongside honoring the past, the celebrations are focused on the future. A new postcard unveiled by the Postal History Foundation features artwork from a citywide kids art contest winner, emphasizing the role of younger generations in shaping Tucson’s future.
“Give history a future. Take that and run with it and add to the development of the city. And never forget its historical roots,” Karrels said.
A flagship celebration is planned for Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Presidio Museum.
