‘Summer On The Seacoast + En Plein Air’ at The Kittery Art Association
KITTERY, Maine — Experience the timeless allure of Summer on the Seacoast, with sun-soaked shores, salt air, and rocky beaches. Long days fade into dusk like crashing waves. See our coastal landscapes through the eyes of local artists.
“En Plein Air” is a French expression that translates to “in the open air,” and refers to painting or drawing outdoors. Our annual En Plein Air exhibit features paintings done from life. This method enables artists to capture the natural light, textures, and atmosphere of the seacoast in real-time.
The exhibit is on view now through Sept. 14. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, Aug. 24, 5-7 p.m. at the Kittery Art Association, 2 Walker St., Kittery, and the reception is free and open to the public.
Also On View: Works by Spotlight Artist Harry Prichett
Harry Prichett’s work explores the landscapes of Cape Cod and New England using acrylic on wood. The light of the outer Cape, especially in Truro, where he has visited throughout his life, profoundly influences his art. After living in New York City for 40 years, he recently settled on the New Hampshire Seacoast, where new surroundings continue to inspire his creative process. Coming from a family of artists and with a background in writing, acting, and comic improvisation, his work is guided by the improvisational concept of “YES AND.” Each piece evolves without a predetermined outcome, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a mood of their choosing.

New Hampshire Art Association awarded $150,000
PORTSMOUTH – The New Hampshire Community Development Finance Authority (CDFA) has awarded New Hampshire Art Association $150,000 to support The Rural Artist Carrier Service and the Artist Professional Development Program. The funds will increase economic and educational opportunities for underemployed artists, especially those living in rural and underserved regions of the state. “This concept has been percolating in my mind since I took on the role of NHAA’s Executive Director in 2022. How can we leverage our location in Portsmouth, which attracts visitors from around the country during our tourist season, and spread the opportunity to artists living in rural communities? We hope to find the answer in these pilot programs. The biggest complaints we hear from NH artists are that our gallery is too far away and the distance prevents them from participating in our professional development programs and exhibition opportunities. Now we will be able to meet the artists where they are and expand our reach. We are grateful to the NH CDFA for awarding us this opportunity at a time when arts funding is being cut. We hope that NH artists will feel the same sense of hope that we do, that the arts are still alive and thriving thanks to community support.”
