A new center has been added at Chico State University that will help benefit Latinx students on campus.
CHICO, Calif. – California State University Chico has added a new center on campus that will offer resources for Latinx students.
El Centro, the new center, will offer mentorship from grad students, career prep, and undergraduate research studies for students in need of assistance.
“These can be great tools for student retention and persistence at the university in success,” said Jamile Balli, the program coordinator at the El Centro center. “It’s one thing bringing students here but it’s another thing to make them feel a part of the community and welcome so students can stay here and have beautiful, wonderful memories of how they were embraced by Chico State and the community at large as well.”
According to Balli, in 2023, over 37% of students at Chico State were Hispanic. All students of Chico State can use El Centro and the other resources on campus.
El Centro is one of three new resource centers located on the Chico State campus for students of color, joining the Black Resource Center and the Asian Pacific Islander & Desi American Resource Center.
California State University has been a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) since 2015 and has been receiving grants for numerous programs to help support students from Latinx backgrounds.
El Centro is open to students Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
