CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Many people take their kidneys for granted until they stop functioning properly.
However, there are steps everyone can take to maintain kidney health and potentially avoid the need for dialysis or a transplant.
Kidneys filter waste products from the blood, a task that, if not performed, can lead to serious health issues. To keep kidneys healthy, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are crucial. Additionally, keeping blood pressure within normal limits is important.
“Just also understanding and knowing your numbers and your family history because we know that African Americans have a much higher rate of kidney disease than other ethnicities so just being aware of that and going to the doctor every year,” said Andrea Johnson from Network for Hope.
Diet also plays a significant role in kidney health. The National Kidney Foundation recommends a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, B-vitamins, brightly colored foods, and foods high in fiber. Examples include berries, especially blueberries, salmon, red bell peppers, leafy greens like kale, and fiber-rich vegetables such as cauliflower.
These topics will be discussed at Network for Hope’s “Live Healthy and Move” event on Saturday, August 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1201 W. Kemper Road in Forest Park. The event is free and open to everyone.
