BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Sweeping cuts as Vermont health care officials try to lower your costs.
In this episode of the 802 News podcast, host Mark Johnson sat down with Owen Foster, the chair of the Green Mountain Care Board, to explore what’s next.
Mark Johnson: Is it going to be enough?
Owen Foster: No. No. It won’t be enough.
Mark Johnson: Tell me more about what you mean by that.
Owen Foster: Well, if you look at the… It depends on how you define “enough.” And the way I define “enough” is what can Vermonters afford? And we do have some of the highest health care costs in the country, the premiums are some of the highest in the country, and our total per-capita spent is some of the highest in the country, if you include all-payer. So there’s really no ability to go up higher; people just can’t pay it. So if you define “enough” that way, these reductions won’t be enough to ensure that we have premium increases around 0 to 3-4 percent.
